Classic research on intelligence view the human ability for abstract reasoning as an ability that cannot be influenced by experience and learning. New research suggest however that that knowledge plays a decisive role in reasoning and that human acquire reasoning skills. Such skills may play important roles for an individual’s lifespan development. We are using behavioral experiments, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and psychometric methods to study how the human brain is acquiring reasoning skills and what effects these skills have on lifespan cognitive development.

Job assignments

The postdoctor will work with the design, planning, and administration (independently and in collaboration) of studies using fMRI and behavioral methods to investigate the human acquisition of reasoning skills. Analyses of data from these studies as well as scientific reporting are also central tasks. Similar work on existing data from longitudinal studies of cognitive aging can also be included in the duties. Teaching and supervision can also be included, but at the most for 20% of the worktime. The postdoctor is expected to conduct most of the work on site in Gothenburg.


Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is the person who holds a Swedish doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree. In the first instance, it should be considered for employment that graduated a maximum of three years before the end of the application period and not been employed as a postdoctoral student for more than a year in the same or nearby subject area at the University of Gothenburg. Even those who have graduated earlier may be considered for special reasons (eg sick leave, certain trust assignments, parental leave or similar circumstances). If special reasons are cited, these must be substantiated in the application. The applicant must obtain a doctorate in psychology, neuroscience, medical technology, or equivalent. The doctoral degree must be completed before the employment begins.


Skills in design, execution, and analysis of fMRI studies are required. Experience of experimental methods in cognitive psychology or cognitive neuroscience is a merit, and so is knowledge of statistical and mathematical modelling. Good knowledge of psychometrics is also a merit. Excellent spoken and written scientific English is a requirement.

When selecting a qualified applicant, the applicant shall be selected who, after an overall assessment of skill and development potential, is considered to have the best conditions for carrying out the above-described tasks. In addition, personal characteristics such as planning ability, accuracy, independence, collaboration ability and communication skills will also be taken into account.

The employment is a fixed term-employment for two years, fulltime, placed at the Department of Psychology. First day of employment as agreed.
