The Department of mVISION: Molecular – Morphology – Microscopy in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is looking for a full-time

Doctoral scholarship holder in the field of hyperthermal treatment in cancerology

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of (Bio)Medical Sciences within the interfaculty research group Cell Biology and Histology (CBH) (link). The goal is to investigate the synergistic effect of hyperthermal treatment and conventional anticancer therapy and to discover potential biomarkers that can predict sensitivity to heat treatment.

  • You will publish your findings in peer-reviewed international journals and present them at scientific conferences.

  • You will apply for externally funded scholarships.

  • You will collaborate closely with both academic and industrial partners.

  • You will contribute to teaching and research support within CBH, such as assisting in practical histology sessions and supervising master theses.

Profile

  • You hold a Master’s degree in Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology and Biochemistry, Veterinary Sciences, or an equivalent field, or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.

  • You can demonstrate excellent academic results.

  • You are proficient in English (written and spoken).

  • You are capable of summarizing scientific literature and defining clear research objectives.

  • You are passionate about science, self-motivated, flexible, and a team player.

  • Experience with techniques such as cell culture, CAM model, qRT-PCR, fluorescence microscopy and/or bioinformatics is an advantage.

  • Your teaching competences align with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.

  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.

  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity, and cooperation.

What we offer

  • A doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation and provided that funding is available, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.

  • The planned start date is 1 January 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the University of Antwerp’s standard amounts for doctoral scholarship holders.

  • In addition, you will receive ecocheques, an Internet-connectivity allowance, and either a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.

  • You will do most of your work at Campus Drie Eiken in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
