We are seeking a post-doc to work within the Department of Visceral Surgery & Medicine, Bern University Hospital, on a project to identify strategies to protect healthcare professionals during pandemics. This post-doc position will be part of an international collaboration between Switzerland (Bern University Hospital) and Italy (ICTP-The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical physics, ) to address key questions on how to organize workforces during pandemics using data from the first and second waves of the Covid19 outbreak. The project will involve mathematical modelling of epidemiology, numerical simulations, statistical analysis and data integration, and the development of interactive online tools for future decision making.

  • PhD in mathematics, physics, computer science, computational biology, statistics or any related fields. Candidates with a biological background will have to be able to demonstrate expertise in programming.
  • Good communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently in an international environment.
  • Expertise in at least one programming language, such as C, Matlab, Python or R.
  • Knowledge in topics such as stochastic processes, epidemiology, data analysis and web design and interactive web app development (e.g. Shiny R) are desirable.
