Let’s shape the future – University of Antwerp

The University of Antwerp is a dynamic, forward-thinking, European university. We offer an innovative academic education to more than 20000 students, conduct pioneering scientific research and play an important service-providing role in society. We are one of the largest, most international and most innovative employers in the region. With more than 6000 employees from 100 different countries, we are helping to build tomorrow's world every day. Through top scientific research, we push back boundaries and set a course for the future – a future that you can help to shape.

Imec-Visionlab within the Department of Physics is looking for a Doctoral Candidate in the field of accelerated edge-illumination-based phase contrast imaging for advanced material inspection (f/m). This position is part of the MSCA Doctoral Network project X-CELERATE (www.x-celerate.org), which aims to boost the development of novel imaging tools to study advanced materials.

The aim of this PhD project is to develop fast 3D X-ray phase contrast acquisition methods and a reconstruction method that simultaneously takes into account the different contrasts that we obtain with this imaging technique, including a directional dark field model. The developed method will then be applied to the imaging and characterisation of advanced materials such as hydrogels.

Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation of a PhD thesis in the field of accelerated edge-illumination-based phase contrast for advanced material inspection.

  • You will disseminate your research findings through publications in high-impact scientific journals and by presenting your work at national and international conferences.

  • You are willing to travel and participate in training activities and research secondments with other MSCA partner institutions across Europe.

  • Starting date: preferably between June and September 2026.

Profile

  • You hold a Master degree in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering or related studies, or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.

  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.

  • You are proficient in at least one programming language (e.g., python, c++, ...)

  • You fulfil the general MSCA eligibility criteria. Applicants can be of any nationality, but researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Belgium for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their date of recruitment.

  • Strong communication skills in English are essential.

  • As a doctoral researcher, you will have access to a wide and varied range of courses and an educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School.

  • You will join a multidisciplinary, international team of experts, and cooperate with strong academic research groups and industrial partners.

  • You will have access to a world-class research environment with state-of-the-art X-ray phase contrast instrumentation and computing infrastructure.
