Overview:

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available in the Department of Chemistry, School of Biological and Chemical Sciences at Queen Mary University of London. The researcher will be working under the supervision of Dr Matteo Palma and in collaboration with Dr Jorge L. Chavez (Human Performance Wing Air Force Research Laboratory). We have developed a novel platform centred on the use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for the fabrication of nanoscale solution processable biochips with multi-sensing capability (Nano Letters, 2018, 18, 4130-35). We now want to develop and refine structural models that describe the interactions of bioreceptors and nanoscale transducers at the interface, and interrogate their effect on the signal generated.

The primary goal of the project is to unravel the fundamental interactions governing nanoscale sensor signal generation, opening new directions for nanosensors applications (e.g. studying dynamic changes in biomolecules) with improved sensitivity and selectivity. To address this challenging task, we will combine our experimental findings with computational tools developed by our collaborators (Dr Tiffany Walsh, Deakin University, Australia).

The candidate must hold a PhD and will have experience in materials science research and ideally in sensing investigations (with CNTs and/or 2D nanostructures), with an established track record of success in high-quality original research. Applicants should have a solid grounding in different aspects of materials science research, from basic wet-chemistry skills, to experience with electrical measurements ideally for sensing, and scanning probe microscopy. During the project, the PDRA will have the opportunity to develop their supervision, writing, communication and organisational skills.

At Queen Mary, we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the previously unthinkable. Throughout our history, we’ve fostered social justice and improved lives through academic excellence. And we continue to live and breathe this spirit today, not because it’s simply ‘the right thing to do’ but for what it helps us achieve and the intellectual brilliance it delivers.

We offer competitive salaries, access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum (pro-rata for part-time/fixed-term), a season ticket loan scheme, access to a comprehensive range of personal & professional development opportunities. In addition, we offer a range of work life balance and family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements and campus facilities including an on-site nursery at the Mile End campus.

The post is based at the Mile End Campus in London. It is full time, available for 2 years with a possible 12-month extension. The start date is 1st April 2021 or shortly thereafter. The salary is £34,220 - £36,098 per annum (pro-rata), inclusive of London Allowance.

Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability. We are open to considering applications from candidates wishing to work flexibly.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Dr Palma m.palma@qmul.ac.uk
