Overview:

About the Role

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join the lab of Dr Neil McCarthy in the Centre for Immunobiology at The Blizard Institute. This postdoctoral position will focus on testing novel therapies for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) using a variety of immunological techniques to determine how candidate drugs modify leukocyte phenotype and function in human blood and intestinal tissue samples.

About You

Candidates should be able to demonstrate an ability to learn new research methods and also apply their previous experience, which should cover a range of key techniques in immunology (expertise in tissue culture, flow-cytometry, intracellular cytokine staining, ELISA methods, immunofluorescence / histochemistry, and live-cell metabolism assays will be particularly desirable). The successful candidate will also need to coordinate routinely with clinical colleagues in order to obtain essential patient samples, hence good communication skills and the ability to organize and motivate others will be crucial. The person appointed will also be required to assist in other areas of research interest within the wider group, so an enthusiasm to cooperate with others to advance a range of ongoing projects will be highly valued.

About the Institute/Project

The Blizard Institute at Bart’s and The London School of Medicine (part of Queen Mary University of London, QMUL) has an international reputation for excellence in fundamental, translational, and clinical research.

The McCarthy lab studies host-pathogen interactions at mucosal surfaces, with a particular focus on human γδ T-cells and their role in gut barrier protection against microbial infection and inflammation.

Benefits

We offer competitive salaries, access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum (pro-rata
for part-time/fixed-term), a season ticket loan scheme, and access to a comprehensive range of personal and professional development opportunities. In addition, we offer a range of work-life balance and family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, and campus facilities including an on-site nursery at the Mile End campus.

The post is based at the Whitechapel Campus in London. It is a full time (35 hours per week), fixed-term appointment for 2 years, with an immediate start date. The starting salary will be Grade 4/5, in the range of £34,220 - £38,084 per annum inclusive of London Allowance.

Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointment processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability. We are open to considering applications from candidates wishing to work flexibly.
