Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Satellite Measurement of SO2 and Volcanic Ash

University of Oxford

United Kingdom

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Satellite Measurement of SO2 and Volcanic Ash. This project will focus on improving IASI estimates of SO2 (using additional data from TROPOMI) and ash (using new ash optical constants). The project will exploit these measurements to study the evolution of volcanic plume properties such as SO2 concentration and ash particle size. Of particular interest are the eruptions of Chaitén (2008), Kasatochi (2008), Eyjafjallajökull (2010) and Calbuco (2015), and more recent events as they occur. The project forms part of Oxford’s work for The Centre for Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tectonics and two NERC consortia. The successful candidate will be responsible for original research focusing on IASI measurements of volcanic SO2 and ash. In addition to developing retrieval code effort will be spent on the interpretation of results including comparisons against other satellite and ground based instruments. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with scientists modelling the same eruptions.

Applicants should possess, or be very close to completing a PhD in physics, volcanology or a related field and ideally have a strong background in atmospheric remote sensing. Practical experience with infrared remote sounding and inverse methods will be an advantage. Candidates are expected to demonstrate excellent computing skills, including a knowledge of UNIX/Linux. The postholder will have the opportunity to teach.

Please direct enquiries about the role to Professor Don Grainger (don.grainger@physics.ox.ac.uk).

The post is available initially for a fixed-term duration of 2 years.

You will be required to upload a brief statement of research interests, CV and details of two referees as part of your online application.

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on 20 May 2019 can be considered.
