The School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS) has an international reputation in biotechnology, molecular and cellular biology, and microbiology, including proteomics and genomics, gene regulation, metabolism, environmental microbiology and infectious diseases.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will conduct bioinformatics and laboratory research in RNA biology and assist in the supervision of honours and postgraduate research students as required. Research projects range from investigating the role of long noncoding RNAs in cell biology, development and brain function, the structure-function relationships of regulatory RNAs, and the role of ultraconserved elements in the human genome.

  • $96K - $103K plus 9.5% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed Term – 3 years
  • Full time (35 hours)

The role of Postdoctoral Research Associate reports to Professor John Mattick and has no directs.

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Conduct bioinformatic and/or laboratory research in the area of RNA Biology.
  • Contribute to the writing of scientific papers and reports for international journals and progress reporting to other researchers and industry partners.
  • Maintenance of electronic lab book to enable transparent and reproducible research.
  • Interact with research collaborators at partner organisations (The University of Sydney, Macquarie University and The University of Queensland).
  • Data management and archiving via research filestore and UNSW Data Archive.
  • Design experimental studies and assist in the preparation and submission of publications.
  • Contribute to the preparation of research proposal submissions to external funding bodies.
  • Co-supervise honours or postgraduate research projects.
  • Offer expert advice to honours or postgraduate students engaged in research.
  • Assist in the day to day operations of the group, including assistance with purchasing, data management, compliance with health and safety guidelines and other regulatory requirements.
  • Attend meetings associated with research or the work of the laboratory and any other research related duties as directed by the supervisor.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • PhD in genomics, molecular biology, bioinformatics or related area.
  • Demonstrated experience in sequence analysis and data integration with strong computational skills and programming experience.
  • A strong track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity and experience.
  • Ability to conduct research with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated experience in genomics and transcriptomics research.
  • Demonstrated experience in data management.
  • Strong writing, illustration and presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to work in a collaborative team, including across disciplines, and build effective relationships.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders, colleagues and students in multiple formats. A Strong track record of publications relative to opportunity is desirable.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
