The School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS) has an international reputation in biotechnology, molecular and cellular biology, and microbiology, including proteomics and genomics, gene regulation, metabolism, environmental microbiology and infectious diseases.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work in the domain of genomics and bioinformatics within the research laboratories of Professor Marcel Dinger and Associate Professor Cecile King in the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences. It is expected that the Level A Academic will play a key role in leading the bioinformatics projects in the laboratory. Specific performance expectations will be set individually with the Supervisor.

Professor Dinger’s research laboratory seeks to identify the functions of noncoding regions of the genome. Of particular interest are regions encompassing pseudogenes, repetitive elements, and those folding into non-canonical DNA structures or are transcribed into noncoding RNAs.

A/Professor King’s laboratory is focused on understanding how RNA functions at the interface of the immune system. Accumulating evidence associates human diseases with RNA sensing by the immune system.


About the role

  • $98K - $105K plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
  • Fixed term – 3 years
  • Full time (35 hours)

The role of Postdoctoral Research Associate reports to Professor Marcel Dinger. The role has no direct reports initially but may be responsible for supervision of higher degree research and/or Honours students. 

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

  • Perform data analysis including ChIP-seq and RNA-seq data on a wide variety of projects.
  • Knowledge of transcription regulation and methods of functional genomics, especially in the context of immune system would be highly regarded.
  • Assess, understand and implement bioinformatics tools and generate bioinformatics pipelines.
  • Contribute to writing manuscripts, grants and abstracts.
  • Participation in national and international conferences, seminars and workshops.
  • Teach, assist and mentor scientists in the field of bioinformatics.
  • Assist Principle Investigator and researchers in the group in experimental design.
  • Any other tasks required by the Team Leader or delegated senior team members.
  • Train and co-supervise major honours and postgraduate research students, with the area of research expertise, as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the teaching program within the field of research expertise.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.
  • Participate in the department seminars and colloquia.
  • Ensure hazards and risks are identified and controlled for tasks, projects and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility.

About the successful applicant

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • PhD in a relevant field.
  • Strong understanding of next-generation sequencing data and tools.
  • Strong understanding of molecular and genome biology.
  • Demonstrated experience working in Unix/Linux environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with shell scripting, common command-line tools, HPC and one or more scripting languages (Python and R preferred).
  • Demonstrates ability to design experiments independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong abilities in problem-solving and independent thinking.
  • Excellent organisational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise work, meet deadlines and publish research findings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and at times with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to undertake any compliance and supervisor training as required.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
