About This Opportunity

The primary purpose of this position is to undertake biomedical engineering-related research on a 3-year externally-funded research project which seeks to develop the ‘Osteoarthritis Compass’, a new, highly sophisticated tool for accurate prediction of knee OA onset and progression on a person-by-person basis. The Osteoarthritis Compass will integrate cutting-edge physics-based models, medical imaging, and knee health measures from large legacy datasets and will be deployed in user-friendly software. We will create personalized models to determine the habitual mechanical environment of the knee and its tissues during daily activities. These mechanics will then be applied to our world-leading tissue adaptation models to predict, on an individual basis, which tissues will degenerate, when, and where. Finally, we will identify the minimum medical imaging, biomechanical, and patient-reported data required to maintain prediction accuracy.

The position reports to the Dr Shekhar Chandra, A/Prof Craig Engstrom and other Professors from Medical Imaging and Biomedical Engineering. The appointee will be well-supported by senior mentorship and will benefit from international collaboration as well as access to UQ’s internal grant schemes and professional development programs, to further build their research career options.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Our Ideal Candidate

To be successful in this role, you must hold a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Vision, Medical Image Processing, Computer/Data Science, Biomechanics or a related field such as Medical Physics. The position requires expertise in medical imaging or biomechanical modelling with experience in cutting-edge artificial intelligence or computer vision systems, as well as some software engineering to support development of the Osteoarthritis Compass' software user interface. Furthermore, you will need to engage with your role as a team leader, conducting self-directed work plans, and helping manage the overall project aims and timeline.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position up to 3 years at Academic Research Level A.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $70,729.75 - $94,637.91, plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $82,752 - $110,725.
