The Opportunity

New opportunity to work on participation and policy with the Drug Policy Modelling Program, SPRC, UNSW 

We are looking for a dynamic, PhD qualified, qualitative researcher who wants to work with community partners on current drug policy solutions, as well as theorise participation.

A new ARC-funded project will test whether participatory processes that engage with values, community goals and diverse stakeholders can enhance the design of drug policy solutions. Three current drug policy design dilemmas (decriminalisation, cannabis social clubs, and mandatory treatment) will form case studies. These ‘experiments in participation’ will examine how participation shapes the policy design solutions; whether trials of participatory processes generate critical spaces where new innovative policy design emerges; and the productive capacity and constitutive effects of participation.

  • Salary: $95,449- $102,091 + 17% superannuation & Annual Leave loading
  • 2 year fixed term contract 
  • Full time- 35hr/per week 
  • Location: Kensington Campus – Sydney, Australia


Specific responsibilities for this role include:

• Conduct research on designing illicit drug policy solutions: the role of participation

• Work closely with community partners and the investigator team

• Conduct data collection through ethnography, interviews, focus groups and other methods as required

• Undertake data analysis

• Contribute substantially to reports and other publications by submission and successful publication of articles in peer reviewed journals

• Contribute to DPMP and SPRC by assisting with the preparation and submission of research grant applications and tender proposals.

• Adhere to all UNSW, Faculty and Centre policies, procedures and codes of practice

• Undertake such other duties as are requested by Supervisor, Director or their delegate

• Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.
