Job Requisition Number 00002187

Field(s) of Specialization Atmospheric and Climate Sciences

Position Title Postdoctoral Research Scientist

Department EIL Lamont Divisions

Division Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory

Location Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory

Summary Description

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, New York, is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to work in the area of Atmospheric and Climate Science. The Postdoctoral research scientist will be part of an international team developing sharper tools for the calculation of radiation in models and applying those tools to understand the coupling between radiation and large-scale circulation. The broader project seeks to provide users tools to make trade-offs between cost and accuracy across an application-specific range of conditions; the work at Lamont will include providing tools to parameterize absorption by gases and on applying those tools to novel environments (e.g. paleo-climates or idealized experimental setups).

We seek an atmospheric/climate scientist with experience in some combination of radiation/circulation coupling, radiative transfer, optimization, and/or statistical analysis of large data volumes. Applications from data scientists or applied mathematicians with interest and/or experience in atmospheric or climate problems are also welcome. Experience in developing open-source tools in Python or similar languages, the development of workflows on a range of computing platforms, and the ability to collaborate well with local and remote colleagues are all an advantage.

The Postdoctoral Research Scientist will join the vibrant research community at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Pincus and Prof. Lorenzo Polvani. The project involves collaborations with students, postdocs, and senior scientists at five institutions in the US and Europe. Interactions with NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies are also planned.

The researcher is expected to present findings at national or international scientific conferences, to prepare publications for submission to scientific journals, and to participate in other activities related to the project including the development of open-source tools.

Duties and Responsibilities will include:
- Develop tools for parameterizing the results of detailed radiative transfer calculations.
- Apply those tools to help understand radiation/circulation coupling in novel circumstances.
- Prepare publications, visualizations, and presentations.
- Develop and support open-source tools for use in the broader community.
- Will be responsible to Principal Investigator on all project related expenditures.

Minimum Degree Required
Ph.D.

Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Atmospheric, Climate, or Earth System Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or related fields.
- Excellent communication skills are important as the project involves collaborations across institutions and the development of broadly-used tools.

Preferred Qualifications
- Prior scientific experience and strong coding skills in statistical analysis and/or optimization using community tools (e.g., Python, R, etc.) is advantageous.

Additional Information
Appointment will be for one year with potential renewal for two additional years contingent on progress and funding.

Columbia University benefits offered with this Officer of Research appointment.

Search will remain open for 30 days after the ad appears and will continue until the position is filled.
