Postdoctoral Researcher Chemistry and Biology

Carl Von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment

The Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg invites applications for a

Postdoctoral researcher (m/f/d)

Research area: time series analysis and mathematical modeling of complex marine biogeochemical data

salary according to E13 TV-L, 100%

starting immediately for a period of 2 years

Application deadline: 15 March 2021

The position is suitable for part-time work.

The ICBM is an interdisciplinary research institute, for fundamental and applied marine research. The internationally renowned institute aims at understanding the function of marine environmental systems through close cooperation of the various scientific disciplines (chemistry, biology, physics, mathematical modeling) of its more than 20 research groups.

The position is part of a project funded by the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture. The project is entitled „Ecology of Molecules, EcoMol“. In the framework of a first phase (doctoral program 2016-2021), a large-scale experiment was conducted simulating a spring bloom in the North Sea. This planktotron experiment has resulted in a wealth of data, including molecular and metagenomic time series of dissolved organic matter and microbial communities. A coherent picture of the processes and interactions between organisms and organic matter during a spring bloom is aspired through the use of time series analyses and mathematical modeling.

Your tasks: Multivariate time series analysis of existing DOM mass spectra in combination with microbial and phytoplankton data series. Process-oriented mathematical modeling (formulation and validation) of the DOM-microbial-phytoplankton compartment.

Requirements: Qualifying academic university degree (Master or Diploma (not of a University of Applied Sciences)) and a doctoral degree in the natural sciences with a strong background in multivariate data and time series analysis, applied statistics and mathematical modeling. Proficiency in R or MatLab will be preferred but alternative programming languages for data science, e.g. Python or Julia, may be acceptable. Experience in the molecular analysis of complex natural organic mixtures is advantageous. We expect the ability for and willingness to work in a multidisciplinary, international team and to communicate with external partners.

The University of Oldenburg is dedicated to increasing the percentage of female employees in the field of science. Therefore, female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. In accordance with Lower Saxony regulations (§ 21 Section 3 NHG) female candidates with equal qualifications will be preferentially considered. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference in case of equal qualification.

Applications, including a cover letter, curriculum vitae, qualifying documents (final academic records), research statement (1 page) and the names of up to three references, who could be contacted for more information, should be submitted by email in a singlePDF to Susanne Wendeling ( ) using subject "EcoMol" by 15.03.2021.

Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Prof. Dr. Thorsten Dittmar ( ) and Dr. Jan Freund ( ) for more information about the positi
