Postdoctoral Researcher in Chemistry

University College Cork School of Chemistry

Ireland

Post-Doctoral Researcher, School of Chemistry

2.5 years, Fixed-term, Whole-time Post

Position Summary

Applications are invited for a position of Post-Doctoral Researcher on the Horizon Europe ‘FreeHydroCells’ Project.

The FreeHydroCells project aims to create a newly designed materials-based array system to vastly improve the efficiency of harnessing renewable solar energy to split water and to convert that energy into chemical energy for storage in the bonds of hydrogen as fuel. For this purpose, we will design and create a novel, freestanding, tandem, buried many-junction (BMJ) photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell to split water unassisted.

As part of this multi-partner EU consortium project, the position here in UCC focuses on rational design and 3D printing of microlattice electrodes of various order, surface area, porosity etc. to be coated with appropriate materials from partners. These microlattice printed electrode will be tested for electrochemical and photochemical water splitting, and with broadband acoustic resonance dissolution spectroscopy (BARDS) to monitor gas evolution in real time and assess the influence of surface area and pore volume on bubble formation, gas reabsorption in the water and true captured gas evolution volume. The work will be conducted within UCC, with our partners in Tyndall National Institute, CEA (France), AMO and RTWH (Germany) and CNR (Italy).

Post Duration: 2.5 years

Salary: €41,207 - € 47,477 p.a. (IUA PD1 Salary Scale)
