The Ax:son Johnson Centre for the Study of Classical Architecture at the University of Cambridge is a newly established research Centre in the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art, working with the Faculty of Classics. The Centre, supported by the Axel and Margaret Ax:son Johnson Foundation for Public Benefit of Sweden, has been created to carry out new research on and to increase public understanding of classical architecture, without chronological or geographical limit. Applications are now invited for an Assistant Director of postdoctoral standing to support the Director, Dr Frank Salmon, for the three-year period 1 October 2021 to 30 September 2024 (fixed term). The job is full-time, but it is envisaged that the Assistant Director's administrative role will amount to 0.5 FTE, leaving the appointee with 0.5 FTE to work on their own research and publications, which must be in the field of classical architecture and agreed with the Director. The Assistant Director must be flexible, and be prepared to travel to Sweden on occasion, if requested to do so by the Director.

The role-holder will work, under the line management of the Director, to effect the smooth running of the Centre. Duties will include (but not be limited to): acting as first contact point for general enquiries; ensuring the efficient planning and running of the Centre's regular and occasional academic activities; planning and managing the Centre's Summer Programmes; keeping the Centre's website up to date; monitoring the Centre's expenditure and managing invoices etc. for processing by the Faculty's Chief Accounts Clerk; and drafting the annual report and unaudited accounts.

Applicants will be expected to hold a PhD degree in a relevant subject that equips them to pursue new research on aspects of classical architecture. It will also be possible, with the agreement of the Director, for the Assistant Director to undertake some teaching within the University, with additional remuneration from the colleges being payable for undergraduate supervision.

Salary will be at Point 41 in Grade 7 of the University's single pay spine (currently £32,816). The Assistant Director will have use of a fully equipped office at Downing College, where the Centre will be housed, shared with the Centre's three full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellows.
