Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS) is a cross-faculty research community in sustainability science within the University of Helsinki.

The mission of the institute is to contribute to sustainability transformations of societies by means of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and education. The research focuses in particular on Urban Studies, Consumption and Production, and Global South and Arctic contexts. There are around 50 professors and more than 290 researchers associated to the institute in the HELSUS faculties. HELSUS forms an attractive international and interdisciplinary research community for professors and researchers working with sustainability topics.

Indigenous sustainabilities forms one area of HELSUS that aims at understanding historical and current power relationships that impact the position of indigenous peoples and their capacities to participate in ensuring sustainable futures also in the areas where indigenous peoples reside. The research area indigenous sustainabilities takes a special responsibility in research ethics and participatory methods in studying biocultural diversity.

The Faculty of Arts invites applications for the position of a POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN INDIGENOUS SUSTAINABILITIES (HELSUS) for a three-year fixed-term period starting on January 2, 2020.

The appointee will contribute to the development of HELSUS research agenda in the interdisciplinary field of indigenous studies and at same time be employed at the Faculty of Arts department for cultures.

An appointee to the position must hold a doctoral degree relevant to indigenous sustainability science (such as history, cultural studies, political science, language, international law or anthropology), as well as have the ability to conduct independent scientific research and possess the teaching skills required for the position. The candidate should have a proven capability to publish in scientific journals, have excellent analytical and methodological skills, and be able to work both independently and as a part of a multidisciplinary scientific community. We particularly appreciate applicants with a proven track record in multidisciplinary collaboration and an aptitude for methodological innovation.

Candidates will be expected to take charge of research in the field of sustainability science in indigenous studies. The geographical area depends on the researcher’s previous work and language skills. The candidate should present a realistic work plan for the three-year position including research, teaching and publications.

The main duties will include full-time research and participation in the activities of the project. The post will require both independent and collaborative scholarly publishing, as well as teaching (5-10% of the annual working time) and other tasks. All candidates are expected to have excellent skills in written and oral English and in one indigenous language.

The salary for the position is based on level 5 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee shall be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The annual gross salary range varies between 41,000 and 50,000 euros, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. The appointment starts with a probationary period of six months.
