Position summary

We are delighted to advertise a Post-doctoral position in the new laboratory in Western Gateway Building, Department of Physiology, University College Cork, Cork, Ireland. This program of research is aimed at highly motivated researchers with a background in the Life Sciences (Physiology, Pharmacology, Neuroscience) or similar. We are looking for enthusiastic candidates who have a keen interest in the research foci offered by our program. The research group has vast experience in research within the area of cardiorespiratory control.

The candidate will work on a pre-clinical and experimentally focused project examining the impact of early life stressors (hypoxia/hyperoxia, infection) on cardiorespiratory physiology and the molecular signature underlying putative physiological changes. The methods used in the lab include plethysmography, in vivo surgery, electrophysiology, qPCR, western blotting and immunohistochemistry. During this translational research project, we will work closely with clinical collaborators (neonatologist Prof. Eugene Dempsey). The Post-Doctoral Researcher will be supervised by Dr. Fiona McDonald.


The applicant should have a genuine interest in early life stress, animal models of disease and cardio-respiratory physiology. The applicant should have good laboratory skills, be confident working independently. Electrophysiology and in vivo surgical proficiencies are sought-after. A publication record, including abstracts and peer reviewed papers will be assessed. In addition, general skills such as attention to detail and exactness, analytical and problem-solving skills, and good interpersonal abilities will be valued when evaluating the application. Qualifying basic trainings are PhD in physiology, pharmacology, neuroscience, biology, biomedicine or similar research experience. Fluent written and spoken English skills are essential.
