Postdoctoral Researcher in Polymer Chemistry

University of Helsinki

The University of Helsinki, founded in 1640, is one of the world’s leading universities for multidisciplinary research. The university has an international academic community of 40,000 students and staff members. The Department of Chemistry ( at the Faculty of Science carries out research on chemistry and its applications at an international level and provides academic teaching based on high quality research. The department forms accountability unit operating on an annual budget of 19 million euros and reports 200 person-years per annum. There are 14 professors at the Department.

The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science invites applications for a

Postdoctoral Researcher

position in the Soft Matter Chemistry research unit led Prof. Dr. Robert Luxenhofer and part of the Polymers and Colloids Group at the Department of Chemistry, University of Helsinki. The unit is focused mainly on polymer chemistry with a special attention for synthetic and smart biomaterials for drug, gene and protein delivery as well as additive manufacturing for biomedical applications.

The research infrastructure in Polymers and Colloids group comprises state of the art equipment and we perform interdisciplinary research in our laboratory as well as in cooperation with research groups in Finland, Europe and US. The postdoctoral researcher will carry out cutting-edge research in polymer synthesis, in particular using living polymerizations with a focus on poly(2-oxazoline)s, poly(2-oxazine)s, polypeptides/polypeptoids and related polymers. Sophisticated and thorough physicochemical characterization will complement the synthetic efforts. In addition, the synthesized materials will be process used various methods of additive manufacturing (3D-printing). Finally, computational modeling of the synthesized and processed materials will be desirable.

Besides research, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to other common academic tasks such as teaching, generation of new research ideas, and writing grant proposals.

The position is up to 3 years (Postdoctoral researcher) including a trial period of 6 months, and the work is scheduled to commence as soon as possible.

The successful candidate for this challenging position is expected to be highly motivated and have in-depth theoretical knowledge and practical experience in polymer chemistry and polymer characterization with a PhD degree in chemistry, materials science or related fields. Thorough practical experience with working under air- and water-free conditions is mandatory. A clear track record and interest in polymers for biomedical application and/or additive manufacturing will also be expected. Experience and interest in computational modelling of polymer is advantageous. Very good English language written and oral communication skills are required. The candidate is expected to present findings in scientific meetings and workshops as well as prepare manuscripts for publication in international scientific journals.

Salary and benefits
The salary will be in accordance with the University salary system (for teaching and research personnel, starting level 5 for a Postdoctoral researcher). In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary will be approximately 3300–3800 €/month (Postdoctoral researcher).

The University of Helsinki offers comprehensive services to its employees, including occupational health care and health insurance, sports facilities, and opportunities for professional development. The International Staff Services office ( assists employees from abroad with their transition to work and life in Finland.

How to apply
Applications for a Postdoctoral researcher position should include (1) a CV with a list of publications, (2) contact details for two references, (3) a brief description of research experience (1–2 pages) with clear indication on the motivation to apply for this position, (4) a copy of a PhD degree certificate.
