Postdoctoral Researchers in B Cell Development and Relevant Diseases

The  performs research and education in several areas of medical science including aging, Alzheimer, bioorganic chemistry, biomaterial, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, immunology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 250 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in Neo at Campus Flemingsberg, a biomedical research building, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

The research group of Prof. Qiang Pan-Hammarström works on the molecular mechanism of immunoglobulin gene diversifications, genetics of primary immunodeficiency and B-cell lymphomagenesis. Your mission

The selected two top postdoctoral candidates will work on a Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation funded project entitled “Developmental trajectories for human B cells” and will be supervised by Dr. Qiang Pan-Hammarström at Karolinska Institutet (KI). The project will be conducted in close collaboration with three additional research groups led by Drs. Petter Brodin, Lennart Hammarström and Hong Qian respectively.

The main tasks for the successful candidates are:  

1) Characterization of B-cell subsets from primary and secondary lymphoid tissues from normal individuals using unbiased single-cell approaches.

2) Identify regulatory modules that drive B-cell differentiation and to model this process in vitro by using inducible pluripotent stem cells and CRISPR-based screening.

3) Identification of developmental or regulatory defects in B cell related disorders such as primary immunodeficiency, B cell malignancies, autoimmune disorders, allergy and infectious diseases such as COVID-19.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

We are seeking highly skilled and motivated candidates who are interested in applying new technologies and tools for understanding the mechanisms underlying human diseases and for development of novel therapies for patients. The applicants should have been awarded a PhD or equivalent degree in medicine, stem cell biology, immunology, biotechnology, molecular biology, infectious disease or areas relevant to the announced position within 3 years. He/she should have achieved the corresponding scientific competence, with first-authored publications in internationally leading journals in the corresponding fields. Extensive research experience in one of the areas is required: iPSC cell differentiation, single cell sequencing data analysis, B cell receptor sequencing or CRISPR based screen. The applicants must be able to work productively via collaborative interactions with team members. Furthermore, the candidates should possess excellent communicating and writing skills in English.

We stress scientific excellence and potential when assessing applicants. The applicants’ track record based on curriculum vitae and bibliography will be assessed. Evidence for independence, innovation and the capacity to work and publish in a multidisciplinary environment is weighted in ranking the applicants. Reference letters will be requested from the PhD supervisor(s) and considered from selected candidates.
