Position description

The University of California, Irvine School of Education is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to work full time on a two-year NSF funded project led by Assistant Professor Shayan Doroudi. The project will investigate the ability for non-researchers (e.g., crowdworkers, undergraduates, and high school students) to aid researchers in conducting academic literature search. The project involves both basic research in understanding how people approach literature search, as well as applied work that ultimately tries to further scientific research and broaden participation in it. The work will be interdisciplinary and the postdoctoral scholar can exercise considerable flexibility and creativity in determining the exact direction of the work. The appointment is for one year, with a likelihood of renewal for an additional year based on performance and availability of funding. Salary will be commensurate with degree and experience. The position is expected to start in Fall 2021, as soon as possible after the position is filled.
Responsibilities: Responsibilities include designing literature search tasks spanning a variety of academic disciplines (e.g., medicine, computer science, humanities); recruiting participants; running online experiments to test the ability of crowdworkers, undergraduates, and researchers (i.e., experts) to complete literature search tasks; analyzing data from experiments and analyzing strategies used by the different groups; designing methods to train crowdworkers; and publishing and presenting findings. If the position is renewed for a second year, responsibilities may also include running a field study where researchers elicit help from crowdworkers on actual projects, and working with researchers, non-researchers, and a web developer to help design a web platform that facilitates information exchange between researchers and citizen scientists. Responsibilities may also include recruiting and supervising graduate and/or undergraduate students to work on various aspects of the project.

Requirements: Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in Informatics, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, Education, Cognitive Science, Psychology, or a related field; experience designing and running randomized experiments; and experience with statistical techniques to analyze experimental data; and a willingness (and excitement) to learn new concepts and skills from a variety of academic disciplines.

Desirable qualifications include experience running experiments on Amazon Mechanical Turk (or similar crowdsourcing platforms); experience conducting interviews and qualitative analysis; programming expertise; and prior background on information retrieval systems.

To Apply: Applications should be submitted online at Please submit a cover letter describing your relevant expertise and interests, a curriculum vitae, a sample paper or publication, and the names and contact information for three references.

Questions about the position may be addressed to Shayan Doroudi ( Questions about submission or receipt of applications can be addressed to Laurie Andress-Delaney at
