Description

Neuroplasticity and Repair Laboratory

Neuromotor Recovery and Rehabilitation Center

Position Description

We seek an experienced scientist to advance our research at the University of California, Los Angeles Department of Neurosurgery in the laboratory of Daniel C. Lu, MD, PhD.

Dr. Lu’s laboratory studies neural circuits within the spinal cord. Strategies that recover function after spinal cord injury (SCI) by exciting the interneuronal circuitry through electrical stimulation and pharmacological agonist therapy are subjects of our research. We conduct studies in animal models that decipher the mechanistic basis of recovery after neuromodulation. We validate these findings in humans through clinical trials. The fellow will also be responsible for helping to supervise graduate students and undergraduate student researchers, preparing manuscripts for publication in scientific journals, and assisting with the preparation of grant proposals.

Specific Responsibilities

Applicants must have experience with the use of chemo- or optogenetic, immunohistochemical, or electrophysiological techniques or a combination thereof. Experience using clinical neurophysiological equipment in a human subjects research setting is desired but not mandatory.

Additional Duties:• Supervision of undergraduates, graduate students and new postdoctoral trainees in the lab.• Ability to work on multiple projects efficiently and effectively.• Ability to work independently on scientific projects.• Assist with preparation of grant proposals.• Preparation of manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.• Required to communicate well with other scientists worldwide.• Candidate should have 5 years research experience in neuorscience in an academic setting or equivalent. • The candidate will report directly to the Principal Investigator and will successfully carry out experiments and analyze the data generated with minimal supervision.• Ability to handle several projects simultaneously.• Ability to help and train various personnel in image acquisition and analysis and make significant contributions to the design and execution of other laboratory members' experiments.
