Position description

The Risk Resilience Research lab (RRR) at the University of California, Berkeley is seeking an exceptional, motivated, and creative postdoctoral fellow to join our team. RRR is a fun, dynamic group of students, staff, and faculty from different backgrounds (psychology, criminology, data science, and more). Our mission is to improve justice, safety, and well-being for people and communities at risk, through policy-relevant research. The RRR lab is led by Jennifer Skeem, a psychologist and distinguished professor affiliated with the Goldman School of Public Policy and School of Social Welfare.

We encourage candidates with a variety of relevant training backgrounds to apply (from clinical or developmental psychology to biostatistics to computer science and UX design). Depending on their fit and interests, the postdoc will work on a variety of projects at Risk Resilience Lab. These projects span populations (children to adults), settings (schools, psychiatric hospitals, probation and parole), and policy areas (mental health, juvenile justice, and corrections). Our ongoing projects include analyses of administrative data to identify changeable racial disparities in decision-making about people involved in the justice system; field experiments that test innovative treatment approaches for people with mental illness; and longitudinal studies of factors that help young people exit the juvenile justice system. The postdoc is also likely to be involved in our “Playing for Change” project, which brings local at-risk youth together with world-class experts to develop a “serious videogame” to prevent aggression and promote prosocial development.

Position Description & Opportunities
This position creates opportunities to build a research portfolio through involvement in every aspect of research—from design to data collection, to analysis and reporting. The postdoc will spend the majority of their time on new and ongoing laboratory projects (including manuscripts), and about 25-30% of their time on self-generated projects.

The postdoc will have access to a wealth of resources for professional development and networking across the UC Berkeley campus. These include workshops, social events, and seminars with allied research centers like the California Policy Lab; schools that include the Goldman School of Public Policy ; and the vibrant Berkeley Postdoctoral Association and subgroups. UC Berkeley is a leading institution for multidisciplinary, policy-relevant graduate and postgraduate training with extensive opportunities for cross-training.

Responsibilities Include
• Taking a leadership role (with the PI) on data analysis and manuscript preparation
• Leading and participating in the development and implementation of behavioral protocols
• Training, supervising, and mentoring research staff and students
• Assisting with data collection and grant writing

This is a designated position requiring fingerprinting and a background check due to the nature of the job responsibilities. Berkeley does hire people with conviction histories and reviews information received in the context of the job responsibilities. The University reserves the right to make employment contingent upon successful completion of the background check.

The position provides full postdoctoral benefits.
