Department:Geosciences

We seek a Postdoctoral Scholar with interests and experience that span activities in the Penn State Ultrasonics Lab and the Rock Mechanics Lab. The successful applicant will have experience with laboratory rock deformation testing, ultrasonic experimentation, and one or more of the following: acoustics data acquisition and processing, servo-hydraulic testing machines, high pressure research, analog electronics, machine learning, nonlinear acoustics, friction, and fracture. Our goal is to hire a colleague who will join and co-lead research activities focused on illuminating the processes that dictate hydraulic and frictional properties of fractured and faulted rock masses and/or machine learning techniques to identify precursors to, and predict, laboratory earthquakes. We are developing acoustic techniques and testing methods to identify the linear and non-linear signatures of rock microstructure and deformation. Our interests span friction constitutive laws, laboratory earthquake prediction and machine learning methods to identify failure and image fluid flow in rough, evolving fractures. We encourage applications from researchers with backgrounds in rock deformation, acoustics, and geophysics. Experience in experimental design and execution is required. This is a fixed term position, funded for one year from the date of hire, with funding available for one additional year. A Ph.D. in a relevant field is required by the date of hire. Review of applications will begin January 20, 2020. The Pennsylvania State University takes an active role in building a talented, inclusive, and culturally competent workforce. We understand that our shared future is guided by basic principles of fairness and mutual respect. Applicants should share this commitment to fostering diversity and equity with the goal of creating an inclusive and productive workplace environment. To apply, applicants should upload:a letter of interest, a CV, publication list, and contact information for three references. Inquiries about the position can be sent to Chris Marone (marone@psu.edu), Parisa Shokouhi (pxs990@psu.edu) or Jacques Rivère (jvr5626@psu.edu).
