Position description

Dr. Emily Baum, Associate Professor of History and Director of the Long US-China Institute at the University of California, Irvine, is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scholar interested in developing the programmatic activities of the Long Institute. The Long Institute promotes research on contemporary Chinese society and politics through sponsored talks and webinars, media, and community outreach. The Institute’s specific research areas include: social movements and social justice; domestic and comparative politics, business, and law; health, science, and environment; gender, race, and ethnicity; and Chinese diasporic studies.

The postdoctoral scholar will contribute to the development of the Long Institute by working with the Director to conceive, plan, and organize programmatic activities; produce written reports and other media content; interface with academics and members of the community; and continue to research and publish on their area of expertise.

Basic education, experience, and skills required for consideration:

-A Ph.D. in contemporary China studies, with a preferred emphasis in the social sciences or social scientific humanities (including, but not limited to, Anthropology, Global Studies, History, Political Science, and Sociology).
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrable interest in translating research for broad audiences both within and beyond academia.
-Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to interact effectively with professionals and members of the community.
-Ability to multitask, work independently while remaining responsive to instructions from the Director, and propose original ideas for future programming and outreach.
-Impeccable organization and detail oriented.
-Experience with or interest in graphic design, website maintenance, and social media.
-Proficiency in written and spoken Chinese (Mandarin and/or Cantonese).
