The Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Science is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of Applied Mathematics: Statistics.


Position

  • You will work actively on the preparation of a PhD thesis in statistics and machine learning. The envisioned topic focuses on practical challenges of causal discovery, including scalability, mixed-type data, and robustness.

  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.

  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for applied mathematics.


Profile

  • You hold a Master’s degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or equivalent.

  • You can demonstrate excellent study results.

  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.

  • Your research qualities are in line with faculty and university research policies.

  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity, and cooperation.

  • You have a solid background in programming in R and/or Python.

  • Proficiency in Dutch is a plus but not required.


What We Offer

  • A doctoral scholarship for a period of one year, renewable annually following a positive evaluation, up to a total of four years.

  • The planned start date is either September or October 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.

  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders.

  • You will receive ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.

  • Most of your work will be at campus Middelheim, in the dynamic and stimulating working environment of the statistics group at the Department of Mathematics.
