Position Description

The University of Washington School of Medicine is seeking qualified candidates for Chair of the Department of Neurology.  The position is full-time and tenured with appointment at the rank of Professor. This is a 12 month service period per year position (July – June) with an anticipated start date of Summer, 2020.  All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. 

The Department of Neurology at the University of Washington has more than 70 faculty practicing at five UW medicine campuses and nine outlying clinics, offering comprehensive consultation, evaluation and treatment for adults and children with the full spectrum of neurologic disorders.  UW Medicine includes 7000 regular and clinical faculty, 4600 students and trainees, admitting 64,000 patients and providing outpatient care for 1.6 million patients annually. 

 

UW School of Medicine is second in the nation in total research grants and contracts.  There are strong regional and national research affiliations that enable our internationally recognized faculty to remain on the cutting edge of education, research and clinical care.  In 2019, the Department of Neurology received more than 50 awards from government and private sources totaling nearly $10 million. 

UW Medicine serves as the primary medical school teaching program for the WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho).  U.S. News & World Report has ranked the UW School of Medicine as the top primary care medical school in the nation for 23 out of the past 25 years.  The Department of Neurology offers a three-year fully accredited adult neurology and a five-year pediatric neurology residency program.

Qualifications

Successful candidates must possess an MD, DO or foreign equivalent and national leadership experience.  Candidates should have proven collaborative leadership skills to direct the clinical, research, and educational programs of the department, demonstrate a strong clinical practice background, excellence in research, scholarship, and administrative experience.  A successful candidate must have demonstrated excellence in mentoring and working with faculty, administration, residents, and students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds.  Candidates must be board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and eligible for a medical license in Washington State.

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or foreign equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
