Position description

The Department of Asian Languages & Cultures (http://www.alc.ucla.edu/) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), invites applications for an open rank position in Japanese linguistics and applied linguistics. This position will begin on July 1, 2023.

We are interested in applicants who take a usage-based approach to language, seeking to explain patterns of language use in terms of such factors as social interaction, culture, cognition, and history. Applicants whose work engages with multimodality, corpora, conversation structure, linguistic typology, or genre/register differences are particularly encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate must additionally have an active research profile in any area of applied linguistics that is informed by their usage-based linguistic research. Such areas may include, but are not limited to, second language acquisition and learning, language pedagogy, teacher training, material development, technology and language teaching, and assessment. Prior experiences in Japanese language teaching at multiple levels, Teaching Assistant supervising, and teacher training in North America are highly desirable.

The successful candidate will be expected to have a level of academic achievement and reputation that is commensurate with the rank sought, teach both undergraduate and graduate courses, provide service to the department (including potentially directing the Japanese language program) and campus, and demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity-related teaching, research, and/or service. Women and minority candidates are especially encouraged to apply.

Applicants must have a PhD degree in Linguistics, Applied linguistics, or other relevant field, and possess native or near-native Japanese language proficiency. Salary is commensurate with experience and rank sought. Please refer to the level/rank selection via RECRUIT for application materials requirements. For questions regarding this process, please feel free to contact Professor Hongyin Tao, chair of the search committee: tao@humnet.ucla.edu.

Applications should be submitted by December 5, 2022, in order to receive full consideration.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, bullying and other demeaning behavior, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UCLA conducts targeted employment reference checks for finalists to whom departments or other hiring units would like to extend formal offers of appointment into Academic Senate faculty positions. The targeted employment reference checks involve contacting the finalists‘ current and prior places of employment to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UCLA requires all applicants for Academic Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into RECRUIT as part of their application. If the applicant does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Academic Senate faculty positions will be subject to targeted employment reference checks.
