Position Description

The University of Washington Department of Medicine is recruiting for one (1) full-time program director faculty position in the Division of Medical Genetics. This position would be at the faculty rank of Professor, without tenure due to funding, and would have an annual service period of 12 months (July 1-June 30). The University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. The anticipated start date would be Winter 2021.

The University of Washington is developing a new MS in genetic counseling degree with a mission to be an equitable and inclusive genetic counseling graduate program that provides innovative training of lifelong learners for a career in care, leadership, and science to meet the evolving needs of precision health.

The program director will serve as the academic and administrative leader of the genetic counseling graduate program. Duties include:

  • Overseeing the design, organization, coordination, administration, planning, development and continual review of the genetic counseling graduate program, including curriculum, clinical, and research components
  • Directing long-term and strategic planning for the program to ensure fiscal and educational stability
  • Ensuring appropriate coordination, monitoring, and evaluation of all aspects of clinical training/fieldwork
  • Collaborating with other members of the program leadership team in all activities directly related to the program
  • Supervising instructional faculty, clinical/fieldwork supervisors, program and administrative staff in all activities directly related to the program
  • Applying for and maintaining accreditation by Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC), ensuring that the program remains in compliance with ACGC accreditation standards and communicating with ACGC about significant staffing, administrative, financial, and/or clinical site changes
  • Maintaining and collaborating with the program’s Advisory Board, including implementation of appropriate recommendations of the Advisory Board
  • Coordinating development of the initial curriculum development and any subsequent updates
  • Preparing the program’s annual budget and obtain approval of the same from the Department of Medicine
  • Convening the program’s faculty as needed, but not less than annually
  • Providing academic advising, as well as monitoring, evaluating, and remediating student performance
  • Chairing the admissions committee and develop, review, and oversee the admissions process
  • Providing professional development for program staff members
  • Collaborating with program directors at other institutions regarding clinical rotation placements and training-related activities
  • Teaching graduate-level courses in genetic counseling and other areas in accordance with professional interests and expertise
  • Providing clinical supervision of students as time and schedule allows
  • Mentoring genetic counseling students
  • Providing genetic counseling services


  •  MS in in Genetic Counseling or Human Genetics (or foreign equivalent)
  • Certification in genetic counseling by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a clinical genetic counselor
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience supervising genetic counseling students
  • Demonstrated expertise in post-secondary teaching
