At the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology at the Sahlgrenska Academy, extensive research and teaching is conducted on large areas of knowledge, from molecule to human. The Institute consists of five departments: pharmacology, physiology, health and rehabilitation, clinical neuroscience and psychiatry and neurochemistry. The Department of Clinical Neuroscience conducts clinical research in the field of neuroscience on various diseases of the nervous system and in muscles. Neurosurgery is a dynamic and expansive area of knowledge, with clinical work that is closely linked to highly specialized care. The neurosurgical research conducted at the unit has a strong clinical and translational profile. The research is focused on developing better diagnostic methods and surgical treatment options for patients with different types of diseases of the brain (eg vascular diseases, movement disorders, epilepsy, tumors), spinal cord and peripheral nerves.

Subject area description

The research area of neurosurgery includes diseases of the nervous system and is conducted in close collaboration with the clinic. The research is focused on developing better diagnostic methods and surgical treatment options for patients with diseases of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. Neurosurgery is a dynamic and expansive area of research with both a clinical and a translational profile that is closely linked to highly specialized care.

Job assignments

Job assignments include teaching at both undergraduate and advanced levels, conducting research, supervising PhD students and students working on their degree projects as well as stimulating/ encouraging staff of all categories to conduct research in neurosurgery. The teaching assignment is extensive and includes contributions to the development of the neurology course at the medical program as well as teaching neuroanatomy and clinical neuroscience in other programs such as the Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy programs. The holder of the position is expected to build up a neurosurgical research group, preferably with both a clinical and a translational profile. The holder of the position is required to apply for funding in competition, both locally and nationally. Another important task is to support research colleagues to apply for and receive research grants. The holder is also expected to perform tasks that are normally associated with a professorship such as administrative tasks, internal and external positions of trust and to represent the subject of neurosurgery both nationally and internationally. The clinical work will be adapted to the needs of the institute and the intended holders competence and experience. 


Eligibility for employment as a teacher is stated in Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg's employment regulations.

To be eligible for an appointment as professor, the applicant must possess both scientific and pedagogical skills.

According to the Higher Education Act, Chapter 3, Section 8, joint employment may only be held by a person who meets the eligibility requirements for both employments.

The employment is combined with a position as a neurosurgery specialist physician at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital, and therefore the applicant must have a medical license and a specialist competence in neurosurgery or a equivalent international specialist competence.


Assessment criteria for employment as a teacher are stated in Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the University of Gothenburg's employment regulations.

When assessing the applications, equal importance will be given to scientific and pedagogical skills of importance for the subject.

When assessing scientific skills, special emphasis will be placed on research efforts in neurosurgery as well as the quality and originality of the scientific research efforts, the ability to obtain research funding in national and/ or international competition, the ability to develop and lead staff, attract doctoral students and research staff and to conduct scientific supervision.

When evaluating pedagogical skills, emphasis will be placed on experience of course development and course leadership. Skills in teaching the subject of neurosurgery and demonstrated good pedagogical ability will be given special consideration.

Clinical proficiency will be assessed on the basis of the applicant's competence and clinical independence as a neurosurgeon. To be appointed to the position, administrative capacity and ability to cooperate will also be of great importance. 


Permanent employment, full time 100 %. The position is located at The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. First day of employment, June 1 2022 or as agreed.
