Professor in Psychological Medicine/Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist

This is a strategic appointment at the University of Leeds which has a close partnership with Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust within which you will work clinically in a relevant specialty. This new post will strengthen the University and Trust’s pursuit of ambitious goals, actively progressing our research objectives in Applied Health Research.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and implementation of a strategy for research, with specific focus on either/both of the following areas: co-morbid physical and mental health problems and liaison psychiatry. You will develop and lead a research programme which will bring together clinicians and academics from a range of backgrounds with a shared interest in the overlap between physical and mental health and service development for people with complex physical and mental health problems. You will also contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate student education.

You will have ambition and vision for developing academic success, delivering academic excellence and a plan for financial sustainability. You will have impressive goals and be expected to work closely with colleagues in the University to pursue a significant world-renowned portfolio of research. You will be expected to contribute to University initiatives for major infrastructure and programmatic funding.

You should have an international reputation in research in the area of psychological medicine/liaison psychiatry and a significant record of administrative and teaching skills. You will be responsible for developing a vision for research which will be recognised internationally. Candidates should have experience of leading with multi-professional research at internationally excellent standards, as well as effective leadership and change management skills.

You will be based in the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences (LIHS), which is a multidisciplinary Institute carrying out high quality research in applied health in the UK and globally. LIHS currently has a research portfolio of £33 million, 53 full time academics and 81 doctoral students. LIHS hosts the department of Health Economics which has a particular interest in mental health and it also hosts biostatistics with expertise in ‘large data’. You will work closely with Professor Elspeth Guthrie, Professor of Psychological Medicine, who has a current research grant portfolio of £9 million. You will also have the opportunity to work with the Leeds Institute of Clinical Trials Research, which is currently hosting several trials in the area of liaison psychiatry/physical and mental co-morbidity.

You will be expected to have a postgraduate research degree, hold the MRCPsych or equivalent, and be included on the GMC’s Specialist Register for Psychiatry.
