The Norwegian School of Hotel Management, as part of the Faculty of Social Sciences, offers study programs and carries out research within Hospitality and Tourism. The academic community at the department is unique and is the leading research and expertise center within its academic fields throughout the Nordic countries. It is also a member of the worldwide network Hotel Schools of Distinction. The department has a collaboration with the hotel and tourism industries. There are currently 30 employees and 550 students at the institute.


Professor in Tourism Management


The University of Stavanger is seeking a Professor in Tourism Management.


Tasks and academic community

The subject area for the position is Tourism Management. The position is organisationally affiliated to the Faculty of Social Sciences, Norwegian School of Hotel Management.


As a professor, you will primarily teach and supervise students at bachelor's, Master’s and PhD level within Tourism Management, conduct research and disseminate research results within relevant research areas at the department, and contribute to develop the department's research environment and the development of partnerships with businesses. You will also lead the development/use of digital and diverse learning methods, innovation, value creation based on results from research, and academic/artistic development work. Qualification requirements

We are seeking a professor with a high level of scientific expertise in accordance with established professorship standards within the subject area. Applicants with a specialisation in destination development and management, service innovation and service management will be preferred. Applicants specialising in related areas may also be considered. Recent publications and potential for future research at a high academic level within the subject area will be given priority.


You must be able to document pedagogical and didactic skills relating to higher education, or complete a university pedagogy course within a period of two years of the appointment start date. The course will be provided by the university.


Our new colleague must be equally comfortable communicating to students and businesses as well as to other researchers.

  • Ability to initiate, obtain external funding for, lead and carry out major research and development projects.
  • Research results published in recognised Norwegian and international publications, and references indicating progression in research and publications.
  • A reflective and conscientious attitude towards your own teaching and guidance activities.
  • Ability to involve and engage students in teaching where the course's objectives, content and assessment situations are closely interlinked.
  • Experience with relevant international research networks and the ability to build and nurture networks—regionally, nationally and internationally.
  • Ability to manage a heavy workload
  • Inquisitiveness, and motivation to develop new knowledge in collaboration with others.
  • Good teamwork and communication skills, and ability to contribute to a constructive working environment.


In addition, it is considered an advantage if you have

  • Experience and/or interest in the development of varied learning methods and digital tools in teaching.
  • Experience of partnerships with businesses.
  • Experience with innovation and the commercialisation of research.


The working and teaching languages are Norwegian and English. If you do not have a good command of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, you must acquire Norwegian language skills equivalent to level B2 within a period of two years of the appointment start date. If required, you will be offered a Norwegian course paid for by the university.


In the absence of applicants with sufficient scientific expertise at professor level, the university may consider to hire an associate professor with a solid research portfolio after finishing his/her PhD.

General information

Your application will be assessed by an expert committee. In the expert assessment, emphasis will be placed on submitted scientific works/documented artistic activity and documented teaching competence. The committe will also assess your experience with popularisation/dissemination activities, university politics and administration, and any other documented qualifications relevant to the position.

Based on the expert committee's statement, relevant applicants will be invited to an interview and a teaching demonstration before any recommendations are made.

Relevant tasks

In collaboration with other scientific personnel, professors are required to:


  • Contribute to the development of the department’s study programs, ensuring a high academic quality at international level.
  • Further develop and strengthen the education programmes reputation by providing high-quality teaching and guidance, primarily at Master's and PhD level, but also at lower degree levels.
  • Contribute to and develop relevant further education and continuing education courses.
  • Tutor PhD candidates and postdoctoral students.
  • Facilitate students’ learning in line with the learning objectives of the study programmes.
  • Drive forward pedagogical development and production of educational aids.
  • Participate in continuous training processes related to teaching and support.
  • Contribute to the development of new teaching methods and the use of different digital learning resources.
  • Carry out student evaluations and drive forward the continuous development of course quality.


Research and innovation

  • Contribute to the development of the academic community, including increasing research outputs.
  • Conduct research and engage in academic and/or artistic development within the subject area.
  • Initiate, obtain external funding for, lead and carry out major research and development projects.

  • Hold posts in national and international committees, as well as in UiS boards and committees.


The successful applicant will be expected to support and participate in other faculty activities and to be able to perform tasks across departments and faculties.


An annual plan for future work will be established following discussion between the head of the department and professor, in accordance with the university's guidelines for work-planning.



UiS expects all scientific staff to undergo continuous training in relation to their own teaching and research.


During their first year, professors must participate in the university's colleague-based guidance programme, NyTi.


Professors who are unable to document sufficient pedagogic and didactic expertise linked to higher education must complete a university pedagogy course within two years from their appointment.


Professors who do not have a command of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language must acquire Norwegian language skills equivalent to level B2 (in accordance with the common European framework for language) within a period of two years of the appointment start date.
