Professor in Wood science and engineering with special focus in wood physics and CT scanning of wood Lulea, ref nr 4330-2019

Luleå University of Technology is looking for a professor in Wood Science and Engineering that can strengthen and develop the work within the strategic research program CT WOOD. The research program's overall goal is to create added value by means of advanced measurement technology and digitization tools by streamlining raw material utilization from forest to final products, where the expanding timber construction sector is of central importance. CT WOOD is domiciled at LTU Wood Science and Engineering in Skellefteå, and the initiative is supported by the Swedish Forest Industries Federation/Swedish Wood, The Kempe Foundations, Skellefteå Municipality, LTU, together with the industry.

The Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics conducts research and education in material science on wood, composites and metals. The business is run by single-minded staff in an exclusive and successful collaboration with the business community and the public sector. Much of the research is financed externally in a well-developed national and international collaboration with universities in all parts of the world. The department currently has about 270 employees, 17 research subjects and 7 centre education. On the subject Wood Technology works approx. 35 senior researchers / teachers and doctoral students.

Subject description
Wood Science and Engineering involves inter-disciplinary research into wood materials and industrial processes along the chain from the forest to the finished wooden product. The research field includes the anatomy, physics, chemistry, biology and mechanics of the wood material, and the refining of wood, product development, manufacturing technology, process optimisation and the visualisation of wood products. 

Duties
Professors at Luleå University of Technology should be involved in both education and research. A professor is expected to contribute to the university's development work, participate in the teaching, be responsible for external research funding being provided to the subject and be available for management and administrative assignments. The assignments consist of developing all or part of the research as well as the pedagogical activities within the subject, as well as following the subject's international development and supervising doctoral students. It also includes participating in research projects and communicating its results through academic publications, as well as being active in the research community within its own subject. The position of professor is a permanent position.

As Professor in Wood Science and Engineering with a focus on wood physics and CT scanning of wood, you will be responsible for equipment related to the CT lab at Wood Science and Engineering and conducting research within the strategic research program CT WOOD, where an important part will be the development of new measurement methods in collaboration with international partners.

Qualifications according to the Higher Education Ordinance and the Appointment Procedure
Persons are qualified for being appointed as Professor if they have demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical proficiency. As much attention should be given to the assessment of pedagogical proficiency as to the scientific proficiency. In order to meet the requirements for the position of Professor, the applicants shall:

•demonstrate academic leadership and ability to conduct and develop research in collaboration with the surrounding community,
•be prominent within their subject area and demonstrate an original and innovative scientific core in their work while attaining a high international standard, including a total scientific production corresponding to at least three doctoral dissertations,
•have documented their experience in seeking and being granted external funding for research and development projects,
•demonstrate documented experience in supervising at third-cycle level and, unless there are special grounds, should have been the principal supervisor for at least one doctoral student for up to them receiving their degree. The supervisory period shall include the majority of the doctoral student's third-cycle studies.
•demonstrate documented pedagogical proficiency and sound collaboration with the surrounding community in educational contexts for the purpose of contributing to the relevance of the education and preparation for working life.

The following assessment criteria (equally weighted) are applied:
•scientific proficiency
•pedagogical proficiency

Additional assessment criteria (weighted in the following order)
◦Experience in research and/or development of methods for non-destructive testing of wood, where special emphasis is placed on experience in X-ray tomography.
  - ability to interact with the surrounding community
  - be able to teach in Swedish
  - be able to teach in English
  - ability to obtain external research and development funding
