We are seeking to appoint an outstanding and highly motivated individual to the role of Professor in the discipline of Economics.

About the Role

The University of the South Pacific in the School of Accounting Finance and Economics, Discipline of Economics seeks to fill the position of Professor of Economics position.

The discipline thrives on its growing excellence in high-impact research achievements. The school engages with stakeholders in the 12 member countries of the USP region on policy and research. It takes a lead role in contributing to the community through economic update conferences, research and external funding; public policy workshops, training private sector executives and policy debates and development dialogues. The discipline offers courses in the areas of Economics, Official Statistics and Population and Demography studies.

The school is now searching for a Professor of Economics. The incumbent will also lead the design and development of the curriculum, teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses both on campus and through the flexible modes of delivery, conduct and lead research in relevant areas and contribute to the University’s research directions.

The successful candidate will be required to provide academic leadership for the school in teaching, research and external funding. The appointee will be expected to conduct and guide the development of the school’s profile, lecture in Economics at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervise master and PhD students, engage in external funding project if approved, contribute to the administrative functions of the discipline, and publish in high ranked and impactful international journals. 

Specific Duties

Specific duties may include:

  • provide academic leadership and foster excellence in research, teaching and scholarly activities in the discipline;
  • develop and administer programmes in the discipline;
  • undertake course planning, development, coordination and delivery (including online and face to face teaching);
  • academic counselling and consultation with students;
  • supervise research students to the successful completion of postgraduate programmes; and
  • conduct and publish individual and/or collaborative research.

The Person we Seek

To be considered for this position, applicants must have:

(i) PhD in the Economics from a recognized University and be an international authority in mainstream of Economics;

(ii) demonstrated sustained leadership in tertiary teaching, including research-informed teaching, curriculum development and the enhancement of teaching quality, and demonstrated commitment to promoting and advancing the principles of equity, inclusion and diversity;

(iii) an outstanding record in research, with outcomes of quality and impact (including peer-reviewed publications, e.g. journal articles, book chapters, monographs);

(iv) track record of attracting external funding and being the principal investigator in international research projects; (v) substantial experience in successfully recruiting and supervising high-degree research students to completion.

 

Professor should:

(i) Demonstrate excellence in regional-focused research;

(ii) Excellent written and oral communication skills including application of advanced econometric software;

(iii) Experienced with distance and flexible learning in a multicultural environment;

(iv) Demonstrate good record of research student supervision and completions.

The position is available for a term of 5 years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.

 

Salary Range

  • FJ $ 177,533.81 to FJ $191,928.72 per annum. 

The University may offer an attractive market loading to exceptional candidates.
