Position Summary:

The Susan S. Engeleiter Chair in Education Law, Policy, and Practice supports a distinguished scholar in the field of school law who, through excellence in research, teaching, and service, will provide leadership to the university, the field, and the public. The Chair holder will be a nationally recognized researcher with an established record of leadership in the field. The scholar who takes this position will engage in graduate programs by working with masters and doctoral students and will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in school law and policy.

The Susan S. Engeleiter Chair in Education Law, Policy, and Practice is housed in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin System. The successful candidate will join the faculty in the highly ranked Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis (ELPA). ELPA hosts graduate administrator preparation programs, research-oriented graduate programs, and community, state, national, and international educational initiatives. ELPA is in the world-renowned UW-Madison School of Education, which includes 10 academic departments and three major research units. The School of Education also includes the Wisconsin Center for Educational Research (WCER), which serves as a research home for approximately 140 grant-funded projects, providing support for all stages of the research funding process.

The successful candidate will be a tenured faculty member in ELPA and will provide intellectual leadership professionally and publicly, and work collaboratively with colleagues to build and sustain local, national, and international initiatives of excellence. The Chair is renewable every 5 years.

Principal Duties:

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide national and international leadership in education law and policy research;
  • Seek external funding for research;
  • Teach graduate-level courses in education law and policy;
  • Mentor graduate students;
  • Engage in administrator preparation through teaching courses and providing professional development to educators;
  • Participate in shared governance and other departmental and university service activities; and
  • Contribute professionally to the field of education law and policy at local, state, and national levels.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Earned Doctorate in education, education policy, educational leadership, public policy, or related field and/or Juris Doctorate.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

  • The successful candidate must have:
  • An outstanding record of scholarly achievements in education law;
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching;
  • Experience with and scholarship addressing diverse populations; and
  • Evidence of service to the field.

Priority will be given to those with a successful record of securing external funding.
