The College of Islamic Studies (CIS) provides a unique platform for engaging in critical intellectual debates on Islam in a global context through its innovative academic programs and immersive learning experiences. CIS also houses a distinguished research division that includes several specialized research centers and clusters.
HBKU’s College of Islamic Studies (CIS) invites applications for a Professor position. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to HBKU’s mission of becoming a world-class research university through excellence in teaching, research, and service.
The candidate will collaborate with faculty, researchers, and students to build a vibrant academic community that advances knowledge in Islamic studies and contributes to human capacity development in Qatar and beyond.
Conduct assigned courses and seminars, ensuring high-quality instruction and student learning outcomes.
Supervise independent study activities and advise students on academic and professional goals.
Serve as an academic advisor to students and participate in curriculum and program development.
Direct and supervise research programs for graduate students and advise on research design and execution.
Conduct original research in the area of specialization and publish in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals.
Serve on and chair university and college committees as needed.
Participate in the development of innovative curricular materials and instructional methods.
Seek and secure external research funding to support programmatic and institutional objectives.
Engage in interdisciplinary and policy-relevant research initiatives within HBKU and partner institutions.
Contribute to public education and community outreach on Islamic thought and scholarship.
Undertake other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Contribute to the MA and PhD curriculum by teaching and developing courses addressing how Islamic studies engage with current global affairs, including topics such as global inequalities, social justice, conflict resolution, humanitarian work, and intersections with digital humanities and artificial intelligence.
Teach core graduate courses, including Islam and Global Affairs, Islamic Worldview, and Research Methods.
Supervise Master’s theses and PhD dissertations related to the above fields.
Design curricula that integrate classical Islamic scholarship with contemporary social and global challenges.
Mentor students in academic planning, research methodology, and career development.
Support CIS’s mission to become a globally recognized hub for socially engaged Islamic studies scholarship.
Ph.D. or terminal degree from an accredited university.
10–12+ years of relevant, full-time university teaching experience in higher education, research, or related industry roles (additional experience may be required to demonstrate equivalency).
Proven excellence in teaching, supervision, and curriculum/program development.
Demonstrated record of scholarly achievement suitable for appointment at the rank of Professor, in comparison with peers at leading international research universities.
Strong record of funded research, publications, and academic service.
Established regional and international reputation in the field of Islamic studies or related areas.
Evidence of active participation in academic or professional societies.
Proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups, cultures, and academic communities.
Demonstrated experience in developing research networks and collaborations within and beyond HBKU.
Proficiency in Arabic is an advantage.
