Position Description

The Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Criminal Law, Sociology of Law, Empirical Legal Studies, and Social & Legal Theory. The appointment will be at the rank of Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.

Qualifications

Required:

  • PhD in Law, Sociology, Criminology, or a related area

  • JD, LLB, LLM, or equivalent legal training

  • Experience with or interest in legal practice, public policy, or advocacy

  • Demonstrated excellence in research and teaching

  • Established international reputation with a record of high-impact contributions and publications

Preferred/Desired:

  • Work that bridges sociolegal and criminological boundaries

  • Extensive experience in empirical research methods applied to legal studies

  • Research and teaching that complement and enhance departmental strengths


Research Expectations

Applicants should demonstrate research excellence in areas including:

  • Criminal justice and punishment

  • Sociolegal theory

  • Legal institutions

  • Empirical methodologies in legal studies

  • Law and race

  • Criminal law

  • Intersection of law with social justice and inequality

Evidence of research excellence includes:

  • Publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals

  • Research statement outlining current and future interests

  • Presentations at major conferences

  • Awards and accolades

  • Letters of reference


Teaching Expectations

Candidates must demonstrate excellence in teaching through:

  • Teaching dossier (including teaching statement, sample course materials, and evaluations)

  • Letters of reference

  • Teaching both core and elective undergraduate and graduate courses


Salary

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Centre for Criminology & Sociolegal Studies is internationally renowned for the study of law, crime, order, security, and regulation.
