The Department of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago seeks applicants for a position as Professor of Practice in the Arts (open rank) expected to begin July 1, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The selected candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor of Practice in the Arts, depending on qualifications and experience. The minimum initial term of appointment term is 4 years and may be longer depending on the rank offered to the selected candidate.

The position includes a teaching load of four courses per year on the quarter system in the department’s film production and/or media arts and design programs. The candidate is expected to maintain an active creative agenda in their area of specialization and take responsibility for service duties related to the position (e.g. advising BA thesis projects, serving on committees, etc.).

The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Service Employees International Union. Position contingent upon budgetary approval.

Qualifications

The position requires an MFA or a PhD in film and media production, with a proven record of filmmaking or work in moving-image and expanded media; a focus on documentary production; strong practical knowledge of documentary history and theory; and experience teaching at the University level.

Preferred qualifications include: Work that is oriented around a documentary and/or experimental tradition; ability to teach 16mm, video, and/or digital production; and a demonstrated record of publications, screenings, and/or other evidence of engagement with both the creative and scholarly sides of moving-image media.
