Professor of Medical Virology (with the possibility of a combined position)

Employment

A permanent position as a professor of medical virology. This post is based in the Department of Translational Medicine (ITM). It may be possible to combine this position with clinical duties. This will be decided at the time of appointment.

Duties

The role involves conducting research and providing postgraduate training and teaching on the faculty’s programmes in medical virology. Other duties associated with a professorship include administrative work, as well as internal and external positions of trust at a national and international level. Applicants must be prepared to take on leadership responsibilities for research and teaching within the subject area.

The successful candidate will carry out their research at Lund University’s Virus Centre (LUVC). This newly established research centre facilitates experimental virological research and includes a biosafety level 3 laboratory for the study of risk class 3 airborne viruses. LUVC's primary objective is to foster collaboration between researchers, healthcare providers, industry, and the public to enhance our understanding of viral diseases and contribute to the development of new preventive, therapeutic, and diagnostic tools. A key part of the role will be to conduct and develop research that is competitive both nationally and internationally in the field of experimental medical virology, with a view to broadening and strengthening existing research at LUVC.

The successful candidate is expected to take up the position of Research Group Leader at ITM. This role involves delegated responsibility for health and safety, finance, and human resources.

In the event of a combined position, the role will involve working as part of the medical staff at the Department of Clinical Microbiology at Region Skåne. Responsibilities will include teaching, development work and virological diagnostics.

You may also be required to perform other duties.

Eligibility

A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise shall be qualified for employment as a professor (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 4 Section 3).

Unless there are special reasons to the contrary, the applicant must have completed training in higher education pedagogy equivalent to at least five weeks or acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way. If the holder is deemed to have special reasons for not having completed five weeks' training in higher education pedagogy when they take up the post, they must complete the training within two years (see Lund University Appointment Rules) .

In the event of a combined position, applicants must have language skills in Swedish, or another Nordic language (Danish or Norwegian) deemed to be equivalent to Swedish, at a minimum of level C1 according to the Council of Europe’s proficiency scale.

For teachers at Lund University, the general eligibility requirement is that they must be suitable for the role and possess the other abilities required to perform their duties effectively.

Assessment criteria

The applicant must demonstrate excellent academic and teaching skills relevant to the subject. Particular emphasis will be placed on academic ability in the assessment.

The applicant’s scientific expertise is demonstrated through up-to-date, pioneering and independent research in experimental medical virology at a high international level.

Furthermore, applicants must demonstrate their ability to initiate and lead national and international research collaborations. They must also demonstrate their potential to contribute to the development of experimental medical virology research. Future plans and vision will be taken into account. Relevant and up-to-date experience of translational and/or clinically oriented research and research collaborations would be advantageous.

The applicant must demonstrate a track record of publishing high-quality work in reputable international scientific journals and must have secured significant national and international competitive research grants as the principal investigator. They must also demonstrate the ability to initiate and lead national and international research collaborations.

The applicant must demonstrate relevant teaching skills in the context of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral-level teaching and supervision. This is demonstrated by the ability to plan, implement and lead training, and to develop training modules that incorporate clinical expertise.

In addition, great importance will be attached to demonstrated academic leadership and collaboration skills. The ability and potential to lead and develop the organisation are demonstrated through documented evidence of strong leadership qualities, such as positions of trust, leadership training and assessed leadership ability. This may also be demonstrated through experience gained from previous management roles and other administrative skills, such as leadership within interdisciplinary projects, research environments and consortia. Experience of leadership in an international context is an advantage. Leadership skills are also demonstrated through communication skills, the ability to foster staff’s professional development, and the ability to contribute positively to the working environment.

Skills relating to participation in organisational development and collaboration, as well as the ability to interact with the wider community, will also be important. This can be demonstrated through experience of communicating research findings and establishing collaborations with researchers from different disciplines and relevant stakeholders outside academia. The ability to disseminate knowledge and contribute to the implementation of research findings in society or clinical practice will be an asset.

In the case of a combined position, clinical experience and expertise in the subject area of the post will be taken into account.

For teaching staff at Lund University, the general eligibility requirement is that they are suitable for the role and possess the other abilities necessary to perform their duties effectively.
