The University of Chicago invites applications for appointment as Instructional Professor (IP) in the Department of Psychology and the College. This is a full-time, career-track teaching position with an initial appointment term of three to five years depending on rank. The appointment is renewable with opportunities for promotion within the Instructional Professor track based on performance review. Academic rank and compensation are dependent upon qualifications.
The successful candidate will teach six quarter-long undergraduate classes annually. Assignments may include:
Intensive discussion courses in the Social Sciences Core curriculum
Introductory survey-level classes
Upper-level electives in psychology
Although the area of expertise is open, the department is particularly interested in candidates qualified to teach a broad range of topics in:
Perception, action, and cognition
Advanced research methods
The IP will also participate in co-curricular and service activities that support the undergraduate teaching mission of the department, including:
Occasional workshops
Advising students on research methods
Mentoring students in professional development and navigating the undergraduate major
The position includes time and support for the IP’s own professional development.
Terms and Conditions: Covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and Service Employees International Union.
Required: Ph.D. in psychological science or a related discipline focusing on research questions central to areas of psychology represented in the department. The degree must be completed prior to the start date.
Required: Teaching experience with undergraduate courses focusing on basic research questions in psychology.
Preferred: Record of designing and teaching courses to undergraduate students at a highly selective university.
