We are looking for

We are searching for a personal chair or associate professor in surface analytical chemistry (0.8 - 1.0 fte) within the chair groups of ‘Organic Chemistry’ and ‘Physical Chemistry and Soft Matter’ at Wageningen University & Research, one of the world’s leading universities working on food, health and environment.

Current research in our chair groups is directed towards the study of organic reactivity at the overlap of nanotechnology, chemical biology, and organic synthesis, and the physical and chemical aspects of soft matter, including polymeric and colloidal materials and surface-active molecules. The detailed molecular characterization of natural surfaces, newly developed functionalized (bioactive) surfaces, or of novel materials, requires the development and application of (combinations of) cutting-edge technologies.  These include, but are not limited to, techniques like X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning Auger spectrometry, vibrational spectroscopy, (super resolution) fluorescence microscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning ellipsometry and a range of ambient ionization mass spectrometric techniques. Next-generation surface-bound analytical chemistry should also consider dynamic aspects of functionalized surfaces, requiring major improvements in chemical and spatial resolution and, consequently, in analytical sensitivity and speed. Surface analytical chemistry is crucial for the development of smart sensors in, e.g., personalized diagnostics and in process analysis and the personal chair will have a unique position, not only within the chair groups, but also within the national analytical chemistry field. We are looking for someone that can both develop and apply such novel approaches. These efforts would complement current work in this field, by two tenure-track faculty and two special chairs (each 0.2 fte).
We are looking for a well-recognized expert in spectroscopy/spectrometry with a PhD degree in a relevant research field. As a successful candidate you will be able to demonstrate your capacity for strategic leadership with a clear vision on the field of surface analytical chemistry, a strong scientific track record of publications, teaching and funding acquisition. Furthermore, you have a collaborative attitude towards current and future analytical needs from the organic and physical chemistry chair groups and applied analytical research groups within WUR.

WUR offers more special positions in the field of Chemistry, Physics & Engineering. Please take a look for more information about this positions at our special page:

We ask

Other relevant requirements for this position are:

  • You have an inspiring, long-term vision on the development of the field of surface analytical chemistry
  • You have excellent interpersonal and networking skills as demonstrated by a broad international network, and are eager to engage with the local and (inter)national analytical science and technology community;
  • You are an inspiring teacher and supervisor for students from diverse backgrounds, with the ability to develop courses at Bachelor, Master, and PhD level, and an interest, vision and capacity to develop and apply innovative teaching methods. You have a basic qualification in teaching ('BKO') or will be able to attain this within two years after appointment;
  • You have a demonstrated capacity to obtain research funding, including public-private-partnership funding.

We offer

You will be working for an inspiring international organisation with a large number of interdisciplinary projects all over the world. The scientific quality of Wageningen University is affirmed by the prominent position we occupy in international rankings and citation indexes.
We offer you a challenging position as personal chair or associate professor Surface Analytical Chemistry. Besides a competitive salary, we offer a number of additional benefits, such as an end-of-year extra month’s salary, a holiday allowance and a pension plan with the Dutch pension fund for government and education.

Applicants from abroad moving to the Netherlands may qualify for a special tax relief, by which 30% of their salary is exempt from tax. You can find more information here:
We stimulate internal growth opportunities and mobility with an active and internal recruitment policy. There are ample opportunities for own initiative in a creative learning environment.
