The University seeks to appoint a professor to the Department of Neuroscience to commence on 1 November 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is funded partly by a grant from the Lundbeck Foundation to support a new Master’s program in Neuroscience.

The Department of Neuroscience

Department of Neuroscience employs academic and technical staff divided amongst 22 active research groups within the fields of cellular and molecular neuroscience, integrative neuroscience, motor control, neuropharmacology, cerebral fluids biology, autonomic systems, circadian rhythms, and brain development. The department performs basic and translational research with the goal to advance our understanding of brain functions as well as brain diseases and their diagnosis and treatment. The department hosts a PhD program in neuroscience and offers courses targeted to both pre- and postgraduate students in medicine (>500 students/year) and odontology, as well as in the programs of human biology, human physiology, molecular biomedicine

New Master’s program in Neuroscience

The present position has been opened because the department will be responsible for a new two-year Master’s degree program in Neuroscience that commences in September 2020 ( The program will gather 30 highly qualified, talented and committed international students with a bachelor degree in biomedicine, biochemistry, biology, pharmacy or related disciplines. During the first year, the students will complete a number of compulsory and elective courses giving them a thorough introduction into key areas of neuroscience such as neuronal cell biology, synaptic transmission, circuits and higher brain functions, brain diseases, and experimental designs and methods in neuroscience. In the second year, the students will carry out their thesis work in a subject according to their own preferences within the field of neuroscience. The courses will be taught by internationally acclaimed researchers and leading medical specialists mainly from the University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen University Hospitals, other Danish Universities, and the pharmaceutical industry. All courses will be taught in English.

The position

The candidate will be appointed as professor in a time-limited position for 8 years. The candidate will head the Master’s degree program in Neuroscience. This includes overall responsibility for the study program and ensuring that the overall aims of the education will be fulfilled. As head of program, it is also the responsibility to ensure that the teaching will be carried out by the best qualified teachers/scientists within the program budget. Moreover, the head is expected to plan the individual courses together with the course leaders and module leaders. The head of program will actively teach at the different courses and is expected to be responsible for one of the program’s courses. We expect that the head will have a full teaching program and that she/he will teach and/or develop teaching also outside own research interests and for other study programs. In addition, the head will serve on the Study Board and be responsible for the “Stakeholder Board”.

The candidate is moreover expected to take a leading role in developing a strong research program in translational neuropharmacology with focus on investigating the mechanisms by which drugs act in the human brain using animal models of disease and human models. The candidate may have a broad research profile covering drug discovery and development as well as neuroscience in general. We expect that the candidate can ensure external funding for the research program, develop a network of national and international collaborations, and promote the biomedical aspects of this field of study. The candidate will partake also in supervision of master’s students, PhD students and post-docs, as well as in diverse management tasks at the departmental level.

The professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments

The candidate

Applicants should have a strong scientific background in translational neuroscience preferentially within the area of translational neuropharmacology. A significant track record of successful external research funding, as well as a significant publication record in high-level, international, peer-reviewed ISI journals are required. It is essential that the applicant have obtained qualifications for academic teaching and a strong teaching experience commensurate to the academic seniority level targeted in the application. This includes documented university level competencies in delivering high-quality undergraduate/graduate teaching and ability to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. We expect that the candidate has experience with planning, developing and implementing new study programs. We also expect that the candidate has broad scientific and educational experience from working in basal and clinical research environments as well as potentially in industry.  Finally, the candidate is expected to have strong managerial skills and experience.

Furthermore, each applicant must be able to document:

  • A PhD degree or equivalent.
  • Established an independent line of research.
  • A high record of independent scientific production at an internationally recognized level.
  • Sustained attraction of competitive funding over a number of years.
  • Ability to establish and manage a research group with a sustained production of master students, PhD students and postdoctoral fellows.
  • Obtained international experience and recognition.
  • A strong involvement in undergraduate and graduate teaching in the general field of neuroscience
  • Experience with planning, developing and implementing new study programs
  • Broad scientific and educational experience from working in basal and clinical research environments
  • Working experience outside the university
  • Strong managerial skills and experience.

The professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment

Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations.
