The Department of History in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a senior tenure stream position at the rank of Professor in the area of Transnational History of the Soviet Union. The successful candidate may also hold a Chancellor Jackman Professorship in the Arts. The Jackman Professorship is a five-year appointment, which can be renewed pending a favourable review. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2020.

We seek a candidate with a PhD in History, who is an internationally established scholar in the field of Soviet history, and who views the Soviet Union in comparative or transnational contexts. The successful candidate must have a demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in both research and teaching and a clear commitment to ongoing development in both teaching and research. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing department strengths. The successful candidate’s research will be in the area of Soviet history, with particular emphasis on the following areas: transnational science and borderlands.

Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovating and independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Strong evidence of excellence in research is required, as demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals and presses relevant to the field, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, distinguished awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements by referees of international eminence. The successful candidate will teach a range of courses in the department from the introductory to advanced levels, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments and a strong teaching statement, sample course syllabi, and teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference.
