Professors of Behavioral Biology


We are seeking candidates in the field of behavioral biology, bridging the links between individual and social behavior, evolutionary mechanisms, and ecological processes through data, theory, and modelling. The ideal candidate promotes interdisciplinary research encompassing subjects such as ethology, genetics, physiology, ecology, neurobiology. They should further be versed in advancements in data science, theoretical modelling, and machine learning. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and embracing technological advancements, their work aims to uncover new insights in behavioral biology, ultimately elevating the profile of UZH. Their research not only con tributes to scientific knowledge but also addresses critical societal and environmental challenges, reaching broader audiences through popular science media.

The successful candidate must be an established researcher in their field of behavioral biology with a proven track record in terms of research output, acquisition of third-party funding, teaching, and mentoring. The future professor will strengthen the scientific impact and societal role of the Department of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies (IEU). They will take over the leadership role for the Kalahari Research Centre and take advantage of its unique research opportunities. The future faculty member shall further strengthen existing research collaborations, e.g., with Zoo Zurich, as well as initiate new ones.

The future professor is expected to teach at Bachelor, Master and PhD level in the area of Behavioral Biology, and supervise PhD students, also across faculty programs. In particular, they will be responsible for teaching the foundational Animal Behavior course at Bachelor level, which includes field work, and will contribute to other courses, including Biology and Biodiversity curriculum modules.

UZH provides generous research support, including dedicated funds for personnel, running expenses, and competitive start-up packages. Additionally, the successful applicant is expected to acquire external research funding. Zurich's scientific environment encompasses a rich spectrum of diverse activities.

  • a research plan describing their midterm scientific strategy and expected impact, also with respect to incorporating the Kalahari Research Center (max. 2 pages)
  • a teaching reflection on their educational values, tools and methods, and their potential contribution to the curriculum development at UZH (max. 1 page)
  • a description of their track record and/or planned measures towards diversity, equality, inclusion, and sustainability (max. 0.5 page)
  • a list of publications and other research outputs, including dataset, code, etc.
  • a copy of their PhD certificate
