Position description

Under the direct supervision of the Department Director, CE III, the Continuing Educator (CE) shares academic and administrative responsibility for the development, implementation, marketing, fiscal management, ongoing evaluation, and academic quality and supervision of the teacher education programs. The CE relates to constituents and agencies including: The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies, the Los Angeles County Office of Education, local school districts, charter school organizations, and other community and government organizations.

Under the direction of the Director, the incumbent is responsible for the administration of self-supporting cost centers that generate approximately $1M annually and 1,500 enrollments. The incumbent monitors changing trends in Education, keeps abreast of legislative mandates, and forms partnerships to implement educational reform initiatives. The incumbent coordinates and facilitates all CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) accreditation activities. In efforts to expand and reach underserved communities, responsibilities will include statewide and local outreach efforts.

The incumbent serves as a member of various ad hoc committees and task forces convened at the discretion of the Director and/or the Dean’s Office. The incumbent is expected to demonstrate outstanding leadership, excellent academic and managerial skills, enthusiasm for UCLA Extension’s public service educational mission, and exceptional interpersonal skills. The incumbent also represents the institution and the department in a number of regional networks and professional associations related to the education field.

Competencies & Qualifications:

  1. An advanced degree in the field of Education with an emphasis on child development and teaching.
  2. Experience in educational accreditation activities e.g. CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) and WASC accreditation.
  3. CA teaching credential and experience in teaching and/or administration in K-12 as well as teacher preparation and professional development required.
  4. Knowledge of CCTC credentialing processes and experience in program standards, new credential proposal submissions, and accreditation is required.
  5. Active and positive relationships with school districts, charter school organizations, county offices of education, regional networks, and CTC.
  6. Excellent oral, written communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  7. Experience with outreach to, and programming supports for, underserved communities and students.
  8. Experience in program design, implementation, and evaluation of continuing education and professional development programs in the field of Education
  9. Ability to develop creative continuing education programs within an entrepreneurial framework in response to changing needs and trends in the field of Education.
  10. Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaborative skills with an ability to relate as peer to faculty, professional associations, community leadership groups, local district, county, and state personnel, and University Extension colleagues. Specific strengths in building partnerships among constituent groups required.
  11. Experience in an academic environment and local, county, and regional school districts and organizations
  12. Knowledge and facility with computers, leading word-processing and financial management software within an electronic network office environment.
  13. Experience in report writing, proposal and grant writing
  14. Experience or understanding of distance learning methods and techniques for adult education using online learning formats. Ability to use multimedia software and tools in the development of online courses and formats.
  15. Ability to work successfully with a highly diverse staff and student population.
  16. Active and positive relationships with the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies.
  17. A valid clear CA K-12 teaching credential.
  18. Experience in developing, implementing, maintaining, and analyzing educational program assessments
