Research Assistant / Associate in Physics

University of Cambridge Department of Physics

United Kingdom

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position on diamond-based quantum sensing of interacting spin systems and antiferromagnetic materials at the Cavendish Laboratory (Department of Physics, University of Cambridge).

The successful candidate will join the Quantum Nano-Sensors Lab led by Dr Helena Knowles in the Atomic, Optical and Mesoscopic Physics (AMOP) group. The group's research focuses on quantum phenomena at the nanoscale and harnessing optically controllable spin systems for quantum metrology. See group website for more details:

We are looking for an experimental quantum optics and spin physics expert with a PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering or another relevant subject. Experience with dynamical decoupling techniques and nanoscale devices is beneficial. Where the successful applicant does not yet have a PhD, he/she will normally be under-appointed as a Research Assistant in a Research Associate post (on the understanding that he/she will be appointed as a Research Associate upon successful completion of his/her PhD).

Applications will be reviewed after the closing date on August 31st 2020 and interviews conducted in early September. The candidate would ideally start as soon as possible after October 1st, 2020. The post will be a fixed term appointment for 1 year in the first instance, with the possibility of future funding. The work will be funded by the Royal Society.

Appointment at research associate is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience), including those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD (in which case appointment will initially be made at research assistant and amended to research associate when the PhD is awarded). The research assistant salary (grade 5) falls within the range £26,715 to £30,942. The research associate (grade 7) salary falls within the range £32,816 to £40,322.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 1 year in the first instance.
