Research Assistant in Cancer Research

We are looking to recruit a highly enthusiastic and motivated full-time Research Assistant to join the group of Prof. Gregory Hannon. The Hannon lab is focused on developing and utilising state-of-the-art genetic tools to help deepen our understanding of cancer enabling new cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to improve outcomes for patients.

The successful candidate will support a national interdisciplinary project using CRISPR based approaches to explore what genes are associated with poor responses to radiation therapy, to help identify novel biology and new therapeutic strategies to improve the care for cancer patients. The project forms a key part of the University of Cambridge's Cancer Research UK Radiotherapy Centre of Excellence (RadNet - https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/funding-for-researchers/our-research-infrastructure/radnet-our-radiation-research-network ). The project is in collaboration with the Functional Genomics Centre which is a world class facility, supported jointly by AstraZeneca and Cancer Research Horizons, developing next-generation CRISPR tools and methodologies. https://www.cancerresearchhorizons.com/our-expertise/therapeutic-innovation/functional-genomics-centre

The Research Assistant will be primarily responsible for supporting in vitro experiments aimed at exploring and validating genes that have been identified within the project so far to understand their impact on cellular response to radiation therapy.

The successful candidate will have a relevant degree in Biology with some record of research experience (experience in cancer biology is preferred). The candidate must have expertise in a variety of laboratory research techniques including; molecular biology (PCR, Western Blot, cloning and RT-qPCR) and cell culture. Experience of in vivo mouse experiments as well as tissue processing and immunohistochemical techniques are desirable. The role holder must also display an ability to manage their own research, involving data collection and analysis, methods development, interaction with the core facilities and coordination of multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines.

In addition, the appointed candidate should demonstrate initiative, manage administrative activities effectively and work well in a dynamic multi-disciplinary team environment.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance, with the potential to extend the role or transition into other career development roles, e.g. PhD.
