The School of Medical Sciences (SOMS) is the largest School within UNSW Medicine, and one of the largest at UNSW. The School is based largely within the Wallace Wurth (Medicine) Building on the Kensington campus, and includes the UNSW Lifestyle Clinic on High Street, Randwick.

The Cancer Systems Microscopy (CSM) lab undertakes both fundamental and translational research to understand cancer heterogeneity at the single cell level using quantitative imaging, image analysis, advanced statistics, artificial intelligence, and visual analytics. Collaborating widely with experts ranging from clinical oncology to computer science, the CSM lab is a highly multidisciplinary and innovative environment that has driven recent high-profile advances spanning fundamental cell biology to high throughput drug discovery. The Research Assistant will provide research and administrative support critical to the further establishment of this exciting research environment.

The Opportunity

  • 6-month, Full-Time contract (with possibility of extension)  
  • Base salary $75, 081 (+ 9.5% superannuation & leave loading)
  • Kensington Campus – Sydney based.

The Research Assistant will focus on working as part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers advancing precision cancer medicine, specifically in the development of novel cell imaging-based diagnostics / prognostics using liquid biopsy. The position will provide technical and research assistance to senior research staff in activities associated with various research projects, whilst providing an exceptional basis for training and development in multiple research disciplines.

Skills and Experience

  • Degree in Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences (or a related/relevant discipline) or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training or experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in live and fixed cell fluorescence imaging using epifluorescence, confocal or similar, including use of procedures for automated acquisition across multiple samples.
  • Demonstrated experience in quantitative image analysis using CellProfiler, Knime, Ilastik, CellCognition, ImageJ / Fiji or similar.
  • Demonstrated experience in core laboratory techniques including mammalian cell culture, transfection and stable cell line generation, as well as basic molecular biology techniques (including PCR, DNA/RNA/Protein isolation, agarose gel electrophoresis, western blots, cloning, mini / maxi prep and basic microbiology).
  • Demonstrated experience in quantitative data analysis, using R, Python, Matlab, Knime or similar.
  • Experience in use of experimental automation systems including liquid-handling robotics and process automation pipeline components.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills plus working knowledge in Microsoft Office tools (including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams).
  • Excellent organisational skills, including ability to organise digital experimental records and sample processing histories, including in relation to patient sampling.
  • Ability to prioritise own workload and work independently as well as being an effective member of a team.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
