Research Assistant in Department of Biomedical Sciences

Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp

The Unit of Veterinary Protozoology focuses its research on African trypanosomiasis. We perform basic and applied research on both the parasite (Trypanosoma sp.) and the blood-feeding insect vector, the tsetse fly. Within the framework of a sleeping sickness elimination program we are now recruiting a research assistant to develop and optimize an ELISA-test to measure anti-tsetse saliva antibodies in humans bitten by the tsetse fly. This test will enable the estimation of exposure of a population to tsetse flies and will be a highly valuable tool in the elimination program.

  • You will develop and evaluate an anti-tsetse saliva ELISA-test based upon total tsetse saliva.
  • You will express and purify a recombinant tsetse saliva protein.
  • You will develop and optimise an anti-tsetse saliva ELISA-test based upon the purified recombinant protein.
  • You will present your research at scientific conferences and write a scientific manuscript.
  • You will apply for external research scholarships.

  • You have a master’s degree in biochemistry, biological, biomedical, or in other relevant sciences.
  • You have a good understanding of serology, molecular biology and protein expression methodologies.
  • You have hands-on experience with ELISA, PCR, recombinant protein expression and purification.
  • You have good analytical and problem-solving capacities.
  • You work accurately and well-organised and have good communication skills.
  • You have a good active knowledge of English (both written and spoken).

  • An intellectually stimulating, international and socially committed environment.
  • A fulltime employment for one year, starting date 1 September 2019.
  • A salary according to your work experience with supplementary extra-legal benefits: reimbursement of public transport costs and/or bicycle compensation, luncheon vouchers and private pension scheme.
