Research Assistant in Development of Vaccines Against Neisseria

Applications are invited for this Research Assistant position on a project aiming to the development of vaccines against Neisseria. The post is funded by an Academia-Industry collaboration between the University of Cambridge and AchilleS Vaccines, Siena, Italy. We are looking for a scientist to join our group from January 2020 or as soon as possible after that date.

The main focus of the research at Cambridge, led by Dr. Pietro Mastroeni, is to carry out construction and preclinical testing of vaccine candidates against meningitis and gonorrhoea.

Applicants should have minimum qualifications at Bachelor's degree or Masters in biology, microbiology, molecular biology or a related discipline.

Laboratory experience in microbiology and molecular biology is essential. The applicant must have experience in pathogen handling and work at BSL1 and BSL2 containment levels. Experience in mouse models of infection will be advantageous. Skills in analytical chemistry and immunological techniques will be advantageous. Advanced knowledge of English (spoken and written) is required as well as attitude and ability to work with others. Vaccination against Neisseria meningitidis group B and non-B strains will be necessary before or immediately after employment.

The applicant will be involved in laboratory research activities and will therefore assist with the timely and efficient progression of pre-clinical research. The applicant will also be involved in ensuring correct use and maintenance of stocks, equipment and software in the lab. Rigorous data handling, storage and curation will also be essential. The successful applicant will have familiarity with compiling and maintaining laboratory safety documentation according to UK law. The candidate must value teamwork and collaboration, and have good administrative and interpersonal skills.
