Job summary

The Haematopoietic Stem Cell Niche Laboratory, led by Dr Tiago C. Luis is seeking to recruit a Research Assistant to join its team in the South Kensington Campus of Imperial College London.


Research in the laboratory focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms by which the bone marrow niche regulates haematopoietic stem cells (HSC) function in the maintenance of blood cells homeostasis and the development of haematological malignancies.


You will work on an exciting project aimed at understanding how the niche is remodelled in different situations of perturbed haematopoiesis and, at decoding the molecular cross talk between HSCs and their niche in these processes. This is a multidisciplinary project involving the use of different in vivo mouse models, which will be analysed by cutting edge multi-parameter flow cytometry, gene expression techniques (including multiplex qPCR and RNA sequencing) and imaging of the bone marrow niche. Duties and responsibilities

You will be responsible for running experiments and day-to-day project management and development. The project will involve a high degree of teamwork, interdisciplinary research and flexibility in developing and managing complex and demanding experimental protocols and data sets.


Your main duties are described below:

  • To be pro-active in planning and conducting the research work and to perform data analysis, with appropriate supervision;
  • To ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times;
  • To keep good records of all experiments and data derived from them;
  • To perform research that fulfils the requirements of the grant objective;
  • To perform duties associated with support of the research in the laboratory, including various laboratory rotas, resources, inventories and stocks organisation;
  • To present findings to colleagues, collaborators.


Essential requirements

You must hold a master’s degree (or equivalent) in biology, biomedical sciences, biochemistry or a related field. Experience with in vivo mouse models is essential. Experience with either basic molecular techniques for gene expression analysis or flow cytometry is also essential.Successful completion of PIL-ABC or Module K training will be an advantage.


You must have excellent written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills, excellent laboratory and organisational skills. The ability to prioritise your work in response to deadlines, to use your initiative and being able to work independently as well as part of the team are all essential. A track record in quantitative analysis of complex datasets will be also be an advantage.


You must be able to demonstrate:

Experience with:

  • In vivo mouse models;
  • Basic molecular biology and gene expression analysis such as RT-qPCR;
  • Flow Cytometry;

Knowledge of:

  • Stem cell biology and/or haematopoiesis;
  • Research methods and data/statistical analysis in this field;
